This session featured a moderated content and cast discussion, showcasing LeBron James’ documentary series “I Promise” with Chief Content Officer Jamal Henderson. The “I Promise” series tells the story of James’ efforts to close the achievement gap in his hometown of Akron, Ohio through the eyes of the students, featuring an in-depth look at the first academic year inside the “I Promise School.”
The “I Promise School” opened its doors in 2018. The “I Promise” series explores the day-to-day trials, triumphs, and life-changing impact of the school staff, students, and families working together in a family-first educational environment that embraces the trauma and challenges that many face in Akron. The series is produced by SpringHill Entertainment in association with Verizon Media’s RYOT and Blowback Productions. In addition to Jamal Henderson, this panel will include one to two celebrity guest couples who will speak about using their celebrity and athletic platforms to increase awareness around social justice issues.
Media Executive and Film Producer, Tirrell D. Whittley and African American Film Critics Association President, Gil Robertson, will co- moderate this panel. The second portion of this co-hosted session will feature an industry discussion showcasing one-minute corporate promos and a conversation with athletes and sports executives of color. Paxton Baker, the minority owner of the World Champion Washington Nationals, has confirmed that he will be participating in this session. There will also be two to three current or retired NBA athletes, whose names are to be announced. The focus of the conversation will center on how the sports industry can help be a catalyst for social change.
